It’s been around 2 months since going to New York (I wish I was back) and I’ve been thinking about doing this post ever since. When planning New York I took a lot of time planning on where to eat. My mum is coeliac which means she can’t eat any gluten at all. My mum finds it so hard to eat as she’s never sure if something will affect her.
Before I get into restaurants in New York I want to talk about eating Gluten Free on the flight. Obviously, a flight to New York is around 8 hours long so there is a dinner onboard and usually either a snack or a breakfast depending on what the flight times are. I flew with Aer Lingus who I’d never flown with before but they were really good when it came to accommodating my mum’s gluten allergy. All I had to do was fill out a form online, I also tweeted Aer Lingus just to double check it was definitely in place before going on the flight. They even brought out the gluten-free meals before the ordinary meals so you know they are different meals. I’m sure on the way there and back my mum got chicken and rice which she said was really nice and it was piping hot.
A website I found really helpful when picking places to eat was Find Me Gluten Free. This website honestly saved our lives as you could edit the settings to whatever type of food you wanted. They also a full map view which lets me see restaurants in the area I am in. What is also good is that restaurants have ratings out of 5 so it gives an idea what’s good and what’s not and there was also reviews that people have made about the restaurants so it gives a better insight to whether it’ll be good. All of the places I’m about to mention didn’t cause any type of reaction from my mum, she was fine after eating everything so no cross contamination from any of these places. We did eat at Planet Hollywood but they couldn’t guarantee that the food was Gluten Free or free from cross-contamination.
Friedman’s: 75 9th Ave, New York, NY – “Eggs With Style” which came with eggs however why you wanted them, gluten-free toast, either bacon or chicken sausage and potato hash. All the items on their menu can be made gluten-free.
Bond 45: 221 W 46th St, New York, NY – Omelette but they also have a Gluten Free Menu.
The Counter: – Create your own burger with Gluten Free Options, my mum created her own salad instead as she isn’t that much of a fan of gluten free bread.
Applebee’s: Multiple Locations – Have a specific Gluten Free Menu. I don’t have a photo of the food my mum had at Applebee’s but she had grilled chicken with some roasted veg.
Don Antonio: 309 W 50th St, New York, NY – All Pizzas can be made gluten-free. Sorry for such a blurry photo, my mum had a ham pizza and she says it’s the best pizza she’s had since being gluten-free.
I would really recommend all these places as the food was amazing and my mum really recommended them for being so good for gluten-free food. My mum was so nervous about eating in New York in case she became ill but everywhere was so accommodating and there were lots of gluten-free options. I hope this post has helped any Gluten-Free people out there and if there are any other recommendations for gluten-free food in New York that I haven’t mentioned then I’d love to know for a future trip.
